Recovery continues after discharge
The NHS gives a general hospital-stay guide of one to three days after weight-loss surgery and a gradual return to normal activities around four to six weeks. These are broad reference points, not a timetable for your gastric bypass or permission to travel. Your surgeon will give individual instructions.
Follow the diet plan for your operation
Food texture usually progresses from liquids towards soft foods and then a balanced diet. The stages and timing vary. Follow the written plan from your treating team rather than a generic internet menu. Eating slowly, small portions and prescribed vitamin and mineral supplements are important aftercare measures.
Nutrition and ongoing review at R.K. Hospital
Dr. Rajesh Kanungo and the R.K. Hospital team handle patients’ nutrition and long-term follow-up. Before discharge, ask for the names or contact details of the people handling your next review, the appointment schedule and the route for urgent concerns.
ASMBS patient guidance stresses adequate hydration and protein, lifelong prescribed supplements and continuing specialist follow-up. Medication changes should be made by the treating clinicians. Tell the team about difficulties tolerating food, buying supplements or attending appointments so these can be addressed.

Your practical discharge checklist
Write down the answers and keep a copy with your discharge summary. An accompanying adult can help check that appointment and transport arrangements are clear.
- Which food and fluid stage am I on, and when will the team review it?
- Which medicines and supplements should I take, in what form and at what dose?
- Which blood tests and nutrition reviews are planned, and where will they be done?
- When can I resume my particular job, lifting, exercise and travel?
- Whom should I contact during working hours and after hours?
- What should I do if I cannot eat, drink or take the prescribed supplements?
Warning signs that need prompt help
Severe abdominal pain, chest pain, breathing difficulty or significant bleeding need urgent medical assessment. Fever, a fast heartbeat, persistent vomiting, trouble swallowing or worsening leg pain and swelling also require prompt contact with a medical service. The NHS describes these as possible signs of important post-operative problems.
Use the nearest appropriate emergency service if returning to Bhopal would delay care. A routine WhatsApp enquiry is not a substitute for urgent assessment.
Arrange follow-up before returning to another city
Ask whether a review must be in person, which reports you should bring and how the R.K. Hospital team will review tests performed elsewhere. Confirm this arrangement before making return travel plans. Remote review is not automatically available and does not replace an examination when one is needed.
For planned appointments, call +91 9826038183 or the hospital on 0755-4260605. Keep the discharge instructions and emergency contact details accessible to the person helping you at home.
